Post NHLPA, 2010 Edition - Great Lakes
It's not every issue that Lighthouse Digest proves to be worth its yearly subscription fee, but the June edition came with small list on page 38 of this years candidates for transfer. This list isn't even on the NHLPA website yet.

Candidates:

MICHIGAN

Frankfort North Breakwater Light
Middle Island Light
Ontonagon Harbor West Breakwater Light
South Haven South Pierhead Light

OHIO

Cleveland Harbor West Pierhead Light

WISCONSIN

Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal North Pierhead Light
Peshtigo Reef Light

That's seven Great Lakes lights on the list this year.

From the article,

"The Frankfort lighthouse needs about $1 million in upgrades to make it a top-notch city attraction, Mills estimated, including restoring a catwalk on the breakwater, out to the lighthouse. "

The current Frankfort lighthouse never had a catwalk, and to build one now would actually be historically inaccurate. I hope they aren't leading the public astray with inflated restoration costs due to a catwalk.

Astute observation Noah. The structure had an elevated walk when it was located on the north pier, but the elevated walk was never re-established after it was relocated to the end of the new north breakwater in the 1930's. Adding an elevated walk to the light now would be an anachronism, and I find it difficult to conceive that the Michigan SHPO would approve of such an initiative.

I have written Mr. Mills and informed him that he will not need to include the cost of replicating an elevated walk in his cost/benefit analysis in justifying filing an application for the light.

Terry, I've always wondered:

Would the lack of a catwalk suggest that the Breakwater light was either automated or operated remotely from its establishment?

Per the usual, It comes as no surprise to me that the Michigan lights have or will have interested parties submitting letters. It's the Wisconsin, Ohio and other lights I worry about.

I hear from a "reliable source" in Frankfort that the City will likely submit a letter of interest, and will propose partnering with a Friends Group in filing a subsequent application.
