Are DCB-24's even made anymore?

I remember Bob telling me about how when the DCB at Ft. Gratiot failed. One day it stopped turning. Coast guard got there, opened the gear box and all the teeth were off the gears. Replacing the solid brass gears is exceedingly expensive.

They should be happy they even got a Vega what at the rate the USCG is putting in LED's.

Interesting how the Mayor tries to play up the "buy american" factor.

In this weeks Notice to Mariners for District 9, there is an advance notice proposal to change Wind Point to an LED beacon. The wording states:

"Wind Point Light (LLNR 20605) reduce the range of the light from 21 statute miles to 16 statute miles. The decrease in range is due to the
proposed installation of a modern LED lantern. The lantern is not a rotating beacon and will not create the false or double flash that currently
occurs at certain bearings. "

Looks like the locals wont be getting a DCB, but much more likely a Sabik LED 350, which seems to be the USCG's favored LED optic, and is the same as used in Spectacle Reef:

That's one ugly light! Then again, I'm a bit biased having seen some nice Fresnel lenses

Anyone know what the "prongs" are on the top? I seriously doubt it, but all that I can think of is that they are sunlight sensors?

In exposed locations, they are "bird spikes" that keep birds from nesting and releasing excrement on the optic.

I see. Thanks for that. Up here a lot of the older buildings just use a plank with nails in it to keep the birds off (no joke - I've seen about a dozen)!

Noah is 100% correct.

The aerobeacons are obsolete and keeping them operating has become prohibitively expensive.

Like them or not, the Vega and Sabik LED units are incredibly efficient and their long mean time between failure makes them a "no brainer" for the Coast Guard.

I would speculate that the Coast Guard already has a stock of Vega and Sabik lights that have been purchased and await install across the country.

Honestly the only way I see them getting an Aerobeacon back is for the light to be declared a PATON and for the city/county to go buy its own Aerobeacon.

The lighthouse is very nice. I wish to get a photo opportunity there together with YOU. We will show our teeth off for sure.
