Irene Tibbetts Dumican celebrates a century of life

DENNIS — Irene Tibbetts Dumican was born into a rare and beautiful world in which whistling winds and lapping waves were her first lullabies.

Their music has accompanied the seasons of Dumican’s life for 10 decades.

“My family lived on Spectacle Island in Boston Harbor where my father was the lighthouse keeper,” says Dumican, who will celebrate her 100th birthday April 9. “He brought my mother by boat to Medford Hospital, where I was born in 1908.”

When Dumican was 4, the island’s wooden range lighthouses were closed, and her father was transferred to Highland Light in North Truro, launching his young daughter’s 96-year love affair with Cape Cod.

  Coast Guard Auctions Off Lighthouses

Pete Jurewiscz couldn't believe he'd won. The online auction, which he had entered on a whim, closed at $65,000. "Honey," he told his wife, Bonnie, "I've got good news, and I've got bad news. The good news is we own a lighthouse. The bad news is — we own a lighthouse."

Jurewiscz, 39, a test coordinator at a Norfolk, Va., power plant, is part of a small but growing club: private citizens, non-profit organizations and state and local governments that have acquired historic lighthouses from the Coast Guard.

An amendment to the National Historic Preservation Act in 2000 made it possible for people such as Jurewiscz to bid for eligible lighthouses if the Coast Guard could not find a state, city or non-profit organization to take over ownership and upkeep.

JELD-WEN Launches Public Campaign to Help Restore the Nation’s Most Reliable Lighthouse

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The nation’s attention is focused squarely on the big election of 2008. Who will be the top candidates – the contenders that shine brightest, the ones with the most character, or the ones with the longest history?

Questions such as these will be answered as JELD-WEN Windows & Doors launches a major public campaign to select the nation’s most reliable lighthouse for 2008. The company is calling for the public to nominate worthy lighthouse candidates in need of new windows and doors for their restoration efforts. The winning site will receive a window and door makeover from JELD-WEN. "
