I am reminded of two "famous" photos of Keeper Frank Hilt in 1935, one whitewashing this tower while hanging in a basket suspended by a rope from the the lanten gallery and the other of him tending the line while an assistant was above in the basket. These photos are in Sterling's Lighthouses of the Maine Coast.

Maybe keeper has one he might post.

Hilt previously served as assistant and then keeper at twin tower Matinicus Rock. Those towers were unpainted granite, for which the keepers were no doubt very thankful.
