The Lighthouse Kids Rally to Save the White Island Lighthouse!

The LobStars are Coming, The LobStars are Coming - Crustacean Kids March in Market Square to Save Lighthouse on April 8

Where: Market Square, Portsmouth, New Hampshire
When: Friday, April 8 starting at 12:00 noon
Portsmouth, NH, March 30, 2005 - Local students plan to use 4 1/2 foot tall fiberglass lobster sculptures to save the White Island Lighthouse from ruin. The lobster project, branded "Lighthouse LobStars," is being rolled out by the Lighthouse Kids in collaboration with the Hampton Rotary to help save the endangered lighthouse. To gain community support for the lighthouse and kick off Lighthouse LobStars, the Lighthouse Kids will be donning lobster claws and picket signs in Market Square, Portsmouth, New Hampshire on Friday, April 8.

The mission of the Lighthouse Kids, the only youth chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation (501c3) is to save New Hampshire's lone offshore Lighthouse, including the lighthouse tower, keeper's cottage, outbuildings, and landing. The White Island Lighthouse is currently in danger of collapsing into the sea.

Over the past five years, more than 250 students from North Hampton School have been involved in the effort to save the Lighthouse. During this time, they have met with the Governor and Council, spoken to the State Legislature, and to various businesses and civic groups. They have also solicited support from local businesses, from foundations and from donors all across the United States. To date their efforts have raised over $62,000. In addition, the Lighthouse Kids with the support of Senator Judd Gregg were awarded a Save America's Treasures federal matching gift in the amount of $250,000. Gregg had high praise for the Lighthouse Kids saying, "These students truly exemplify what can be accomplished when citizens take an active interest in serving their local communities and working in conjunction with public and private organizations to reach their goal." While the money raised to date is a significant amount, it is a long way from the $550,000 estimate for total station restoration. Hence the ambitious fundraising project by this year's crop of Lighthouse Kids: the Lighthouse LobStars.

Other communities have used larger-than-life critter sculptures as public art to raise funds, but never before has the New Hampshire seacoast experienced the excitement. Local businesses will sponsor the upcoming Lighthouse LobStar sculptures. Already the Lighthouse Kids have succeeded in signing on three local organizations to sponsor lobsters including, the Little Harbor Charitable Foundation, Bottomline Technologies and Performance Business Solutions. Each LobStar will be designed and painted by seacoast artisans, displayed throughout the seacoast this summer; then sold at auction in the fall.

The Lighthouse Kids value your help in saving the White Island Lighthouse. If you are interested in learning more or supporting the Lighthouse LobStar effort as an artist, sponsoring business or a volunteer, please call Jen King at (603) 964-6986 or visit http://www.lighthousekids.org.

this is quite a commendable project. I had the opportunity at the ALF meeting to hear their teacher talk about their work, and it is amazing how much they do by writing letters and making requests for help and financial aid.

I'll be a the "LobStar" rally tomorrow, and I'll be taking photos to go along with a Lighthouse Digest article. These kids really are doing a fantastic job. It looks probable that some restoration work will be done on the lighthouse tower at White Island later this year -- not a moment too soon! But a lot more money is needed -- as you see in the press release -- for a full restoration of the station.
