This is not a lighthouse photo, but while Jeremy and I continued work on the interior of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse, JD discovered this little guy hanging out on the rocks near the light.

We both had 300mm lenses, and I still had to crop quite a bit!

I really don't want to say that that is the seal of approval, do I?

Barry,

Ross,

Are seals common in the Northeast? I generally associate them with the left coast.

I wouldn't say i see them all the time, but quite frequently in the recent years i've seen a lot of them, in and out of the water.

You can certainly see seals in the Rhode Island's Naraganset Bay this time of year. There were plenty of them out on the rocks during my trip out to Rose Island Light a couple weekends ago.

They are often seen along the NJ coast. Many people on the shore, especially near Sandy Hook, see them and say, "Look at the dog swimming."

The ones out by Rose Island just blended into the rocks they were resting on. Without knowing to look for them we could have easily just passed on by.

Here's another shot of the Official Seal of Approval, waving to us from his post. The seals seen in the Northeast are most commonly harbor seals. Gray seals and harp seals are also seen less often. On the West Coast it's primarily sea lions.

Harbor seals are very common along the Maine coast in summer, and are seen often in cooler weather in southern New England.

Here are a couple of other guys that walked right by my car as I was driving away from the lighthouse/Coast Guard station. I like to think they're the Turkeys of Approval.

You never know who you'll meet at a lighthouse. I love it when stuff like that happens.
