Flatto said he didn't think annual maintenance of the boxy structure would cost much because it isn't occupied or accessible to the public. He added the town's intention would be for Penfield Lighthouse to be a historical landmark, so it wouldn't need to be in "tip-top shape" for guided tours.

I find this contention troubling. Merely maintaining a shell, because nobody goes inside it, leaves you with nothing but a shell eventually. Not to be discouraging, as I'd love to see the town own and maintain this light, but it's going to cost more than Selectman Flatto thinks.

You're absolutely right -- it will definitely cost more over time than they think, even if if the interior isn't maintained in "tip top" shape. The NHLPA process of lighthouse transfers has many drawbacks when it comes to offshore lights. As I told the reporter, I feel strongly that the federal government shouldn't be turning its back on these historic properties. At the very least, there should be a new federal grant program specifically for lighthouse maintenance.

I am in agreement with what was just posted by Keeper. Groups do not take in account of maintaining building and properties even if they are great shape to begin with. The cost of rebuilding a lighthouse is going a great deal of money.

I cannot see any historic society wanting to take on a building that you cannot a least walk around. The costs and effort to take boat trips out to see this lighthouse would not be worth it.

One can certainly hope that PETA does not get this or any other lighthouse. I can just see it now the headlines now "Sports Fisherman Attacked by Penfield Lighthouse owners" or "Penfield Lighthouses Owners (PETA) Scares Away Locals."

PETA APPLIES TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF PENFIELD REEF LIGHTHOUSE; SEEKS NATIONAL HQ FOR ITS FISH EMPATHY PROJECT

This is exactly what the lighthouse community does NOT need. They have no interest in preservation of this light. They simply want to use it as a staging grounds for one of their bizarre protests. One can only hope common sense prevails and their request is denied.

Regardless of what one thinks about PETA's stance on fish (or anything else) or whether it's appropriate for them to use a lighthouse in this way, their letter shows a glaring lack of understanding of the access issues at Penfield Reef. They seem to think it's a facility people can drive to, but in reality it's an offshore lighthouse with extremely limited access. I think they'd end up feeding their faux fish sticks to the seagulls.

A good point has just been make by Keeper. Some of the groups do not understand issues like access to a lighthouse. In addition any group has to ask it self it in keeping with the mission statement of the said group. To paraphrase the last posting is it an appropriate use of and for the lighthouse.

Who ever ends up with this lighthouse is going to have a major job in just the clean up and clean out of it. The proper removal and disposal of the toxic material in this lighthouse is going to be a major undertaking.

The on going maintenance of the lighthouse is another set of issues to be dealt with.

Let's just hope that who ever ends being the caretaker will do a good job now and in the future.
