Why do the news outlets keep saying the CG is looking for buyers when the whole point of the NHLPA was to give away the lights to eligible parties.[/i]

Same reason most news outlets have no clue about anything they are reporting. :P

Noah, the lighthouses in water and small islands have not done well. Most non-profits do not feel they have the resoures. Unfortuately, it is hard to raise funds to lighthouses that can not be driven to in a car.

I'm aware of the details of the NHLPA process. Has whaleback moved past the inital phase and onto the auction block? I need to check that... I know that this same topic has also just come up on the great lakes board, where the light at Conneaut was applied for and the acticle made it sound like the interested parties were going to buy the light. Just stating that many articles as of late haven't been doing a good job with the detail of the NHLPA.

No, Whaleback is still at the stage where interested parties can submit a letter of interest, prior to submitting an application. There's another article on Whaleback in today's Portsmouth Herald:

Those guys are friggin' spaceshots, no question.

They'll have a rough time with any part of the applicaton part of the ownership quest.

I was asked at the Portsmouth Harbor open house earlier today by the local newspapers what I thought of it. I reserved my personal comments out of respect of my representation of FPHL and ALF.

The publicity they're getting from this ALONE is all they need or want.

PETA is clearly unclear on the concept of what an OFFSHORE lighthouse is. I agree with Ross that this has to be a publicity stunt on their part -- they can't really think they have a chance to get ownership of Whaleback or any other offshore lighthouse.

It would be pretty funny though to picture the PETA people looking at all the fisherman that would be fishing by the light just to aggravate them. I can't think of any fisherman that I know who would care about PETA when it comes to fishing. I know a few that would fry up a few fish right there on the boat and eat them.

I think you're right. There are lobster traps all around the ledges at Whaleback, and always people fishing from boats and from the pier nearby at Fort Foster in Kittery.
