"Safety issues" Again, the government finds reasons to keep people from the lights they let rot.

If someone is not living and or being a caretaker out at Beavertail I can see major problems. For those of you who have not been to Beavertail is it off by it self at the very end of Jamestown. The Coast Guard is making a mistake in not allowing or having say Coast Guard person live and take care of the place.

The ideal type of person or couple I could see living out at Beavertail would be people who could take care of the place a bit. They could do some moderate upkeep of the buildings and grounds. In my mind would be a wonderful place to live. However one would need to get used to the fog horn at times. I think after a while you would not hear it. Also the place can get crowded with people depending on the weather and time of year. You would have to not be bothered by people looking in your windows and the like.

The idea of vandalism and neglect is very disturbing. The first thought that came to my mind was the 1984 fire at Fourteen Mile Point in the U. P. of Michigan.

Perhaps they are taking the first steps in excessing off the property?

There's a much more detailed version of the story here:

http://www.newportdailynews.com/articles/2008/02/23/jamestown/doc47bfa830d0659792507953.txt

They were supposed to be using one of my aerial shots of Beavertail with the story, but I haven't seen the print version so I don't know if they did.

The main issue about the house is lead paint, and I agree that it really shouldn't be an issue. Hopefully they'll get rid of the lead paint and it will stop being an issue, but that will cost a good amount of money.

Thank you for posting the news story. I have very strong opinions about having someone living at Beavertail full time. The issues stated in the article can be fixed or worked on. I do not see any reason why a couple with older children could not live at the Beavertail. A couple with out children even better. I do not see adult eating paint chips. The door is issue is grandstanding by the Coast Guard.

I don't think it's grandstanding; I think it's simply the Coast Guard trying to closely follow the rules as they see them. The Coast Guard has gotten burned on lead paint issues and I think they're afraid of liability.

I do understand about following the rules. It just seems like something, somehow, someway can we worked out so someone is living at Beavertail full time. The idea of Beavertail not being maintained or harmed really bothers me.
