Letter to the editor in a local newspaper this week. Kind of an unusual request. However, the last lines (bolded) were a little bit upsetting.

The Friends of the Breakwater Lighthouse would like to request assistance from the public.

During the hours that we are open for guests, we proudly display an American flag on our flagpole. We take it down when we leave and don't put it up during the week or the winter months. We have no light to shine upon it at night which is required by regulations for display of the flag. There is also no one there to take care of it during the winter months.

Someone has been going out to the lighthouse and putting up a flag of their own. We assume the person is doing so with the thought that they are doing a good deed. Unfortunately, with no one there to take care of it, the flag gets very torn and tattered and looks unpleasant. We have heard from several veterans that they feel this is disrespectful and they are offended. We have also heard from Governor Baldacci's office, due to complaints he has had about it. As soon as we become aware of it, we remove it and respectfully put it to rest. This has been ongoing for the last couple of years.

We would like to ask the public to please respect this private property and not put up a flag on our pole or anyone else's without their permission.

Please see the attached photos of the flag we took down a few weeks ago and the flag we replaced it with.

The lighthouse has also been the victim of vandals last year and just recently our donation box was stolen. We would like to ask anyone with information regarding these acts to please notify the Rockland police or someone from the Friends of the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse. A lot of good people have put in hours of hard work to make the lighthouse a nice place for everyone to visit.

This is Nuts -- First a whackjob who sneaks in to put up a flag that he doesn't take care of -- Then vandals and thieves who's lives are so messed up that they can't stand to see anyplace that is nice..........

What is it going to take -- Armed Gaurds ?

These kinds of Idiots just ruin it for the rest of us who respect these places...........

Chuck, the vandalism last year wasn't the first time. They (taggers) did quite a lot of damage 2 years ago.

Some people can just be stupid...

I can imagine that if Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse wasn't on Coast Guard property, it would be subject to vandalism to a degree, unfortunately, that's what people do.

I disagree on the first (the "flag raiser" seems to have good intents), but agree with you on the second. Vandalism and thievery are terrible things (no kidding  ), but to do it to something a group of volunteers has been working to restore? That is outrageous. Maybe some prison time will clear their minds.

What is it going to take -- Armed Gaurds ?

I propose hiring Clint Eastwood in to reprise his Dirty Harry role... :D
