I scrapped my original idea and started a new design for Gulf Lights. I set up an index page for you to see, please post your comments on what you like/don't like.

If you're going to use an "enter" page, I'd put in a refresh to your index page so visitors don't have to click the link to get in. You can set the refresh to "0" so the page flashes off quickly.

I think the layout doesn't look bad, you'll want to use bigger fonts for the links on th left side. Keep working on it, it'll be cool to see the whole site online!

To be quite honest Zach, entry pages give me the horrors. They serve no useful purpose except to frustrate the viewer unless, of course, there is something worth looking at on them.
They seemed to be all the rage a while back with flash movies but they also were frustrating as they took quite a while to load. OK the first time round but boring after a few visits.
I would also add the location of your Gulf Lights a bit more prominently than the first line of the welcome message. Perhaps under the logo.
There also seems to be some printing obscured by the search bar. "Browse by State" actually. It renders OK in IE but not in Firefox.

I am in agreement - lose the entry page.

Question are you going to continue with the grey background???
It is grim and does not pull me in. It was a major turn off for me. I want something bright and with bit more color. Grey just does not have the positive energy that this site needs.

These are just my thoughts.

The entry page is just to state the best resolution to view the site in, I plan on keeping it only because I plan on having a version for 800x600 and one for 1024x768. I will change it eventually though to make it nicer.

I also plan on experimenting with textured backgrounds when I get the chance.
