As mentioned in another topic getting on and off light stations was often dangerous and landing more so than launching at a boathouse ramp for once the bow of the boat is in contact with the ramp a wave from the can then flip the boat. Timing must be near perfect to prevent this and most immediately pull the boat up out of reach of the waves. A person alone in the boat can not accomplish this so one or more people on shore are needed.

The photo are at Whitehead Light. Wave from an earlier storm had taken the ramp that led from shore to the stone wharf.

Landing at Matinicus Rock, family photos.
A most difficult location for being many miles off the coast with nearly continuous ocean waves that follow around the shore to cross the landing are from the side.

There is a recent book Well Out To Sea describing challenges of life on Matinicus Island. Matinicus Rock is several miles further, the home for my family for ten years, first there when my mother was age 4. The keepers would have to go to Matinicus in the small boat in these photos to obtain household supplies from a small store and to get the mail. There was only a brief period with phone connection to Matinicus or the mainland during those years. And that store depending on sea conditions to obtain items from the mainland so one might get to the store from the lighthouse and the store not have what was needed.
