TV alert for Thursday night 1/6/05, for folks with cable... The Sci-Fi channel 8-9pm et, "Ghost Hunters", U.S. Coast Guard seeks the help of the ghost hunters to investigate the legend of a haunted lighthouse. The following is the blurb on episode 104 from their website:

The U.S. Coast Guard has asked TAPS to investigate the Race Rock Lighthouse in Long Island Sound, off the coast of New London, Conn. Built in 1878, the now fully automated lighthouse is reputed to be haunted by the lighthouse keepers who once lived there. Jason and Grant's team, which includes investigators Andy Andrews and Heather Drolet, is escorted there by Coast Guard boat.

Andy follows an EMF reading up the spiral staircase. Heather divines energy with her dowsing rods. An unseen force appears to be on the stairs. Grant takes a folding chair and camps out in the lighthouse attic, hoping to catch some EVPs.

Back at TAPS headquarters, Andy and Brian Harnois present their findings to Jason and Grant. The orbs picked up by the infrared cameras can be explained by fog, dust and other natural phenomenon.

What can't be explained is what a camera recorded in the attic: Grant gets up and leaves through the only door. Minutes later, his chair abruptly moves on its own.

As hard as it is for Jason to admit it, he and Grant report to U.S. Coast Guard Senior Chief Boatswain's Mate J. Nolda and Boatswain's First Mate Peter Jennings that the lighthouse indeed does appear to be haunted.

I'm already set to record this one, you beat me to announcing it. :( I'm too slow.

Sci-Fi has a show called proof positive, and a couple weeks ago they had a really good segment on there regarding the possible haunting at Old Presque Isle on Lake Huron. If I hear of a repeat I'll post it here.

Hmmmm.... Interesting.

Is it or isn't it? Anyone who watched care to venture an opinion as to the paranormal state of this lighthouse??

Well Hersh...I shall give my opinion :D I enjoyed seeing the lighthouse..but I thought the show was a little on the "Hollywood" side. I didn't see any positive proof that the light was haunted. Yeah the chair moved. The room was dark and for all we know they could of had a fishing line tied to the legs and moved it. Far as orbs..a lot of times they aren't orbs but reflections or other lights. Maybe I'm to much of a sceptic !!

You're right, Stephen....something moved that chair. I would like to believe that it was [something] associated with the "paranormal" because I feel that it can and does exist. However, I also believe in the power of the hoax and what some will do in order to achieve it. :)

I saw this show when it was first on a couple of months ago, and I must say I wasn't impressed with the production itself or the ghosthunting team. The chair moving was mildly interesting but inconclusive. I doubt that it was hoaxed, but I wasn't completely convinced that it wasn't.

Mostly, I was just irritated by the way the show was edited and shot in such a way that nothing was focused on for more than a few seconds. Sadly, this is the way much of our TV and movies are put together these days.

I have a totally open mind on the subject of lighthouse "hauntings" or whatever you want to call them, but I'd really like to see a more serious treatment of the subject.

"Proof Positive" was a bit better, I thought. At least it followed through on various possible explantions.

I agree that proof positive was a better show, much more scientific. After watching this show, I have to say I'm not convinced simply because of the chair inicdent. I pretty much ignored the whole orb thing, that was less tham impressive.

As for the 'haunting' I'm pretty skeptical myself, and this didn't change that. But who knows..... 8O
