Attention lighthouse stewards:

As you may be aware, we at GLLKA have entered into a collaboration with Emmet County in their restoration, preservation and interpretation of the 1869 McGulpin Point lighthouse, which is located in the Straits of Mackinac, approximately two miles west of the Mackinac Bridge.

When the lighthouse was abandoned in 1906, the lantern and lens were removed, and part of the restoration plan calls for the fabrication of a complete replica lantern which will be installed in time for the relighting of the lighthouse on May 30, 2009.

As part of the lantern reconstruction, we are having replica bronze lantern vents cast. These vents were installed in the parapet walls, and were adjusted by the keepers to ensure a proper flow of air through the lantern. We will be ordering four of these vents for McGulpin Point, at a cost of $326.00 per assembly, which includes the castings, nuts, knobs, final polishing and assembly. If we order twelve units or more, the unit price will reduce to $293.00 per set.

These vents were manufactured for the Lighthouse Service to two designs for Fourth Order lanterns on the Great Lakes. One having a series of five radially-oriented vents, and the other a single half-moon vent. In accordance with what was originally used at McGulpin Point, we will be ordering the half-moon version, photos of which appears in the photos below.

Since these vents have been removed from many lighthouses over the years, we are taking the opportunity to inform you of this impending purchase in the event that you might wish to order replacements vents for your lanterns at cost, or as an addition to your museum collections.

Since the May relighting is fast approaching, we will need to place the order within the next two weeks. Please let us know as soon as possible if you are interested in joining us in this order. Also, please let anyone know about this posting if you feel they may have an interest.

Please contact me at terry@gllka.com if you have an interest.

Don't have anyone immediate, perhaps SOSCL?

Terry as usual your work with GLLKA is very impressive. This is just another example of what makes GLLKA stand out - its dedication to authenticity.

Following-up on this topic, some other lighthouse preservation groups did participate, and last week we entered an order with the foundry to cast 12 sets. We should be taking delivery of the vents in about 60 days. Glad we could be of help.

Are you at liberty to say who else ordered vents?

I see no problem in publishing such a listing - Four for Pilot Island, three for Port Ausin Reef and one for Pointe aux Barques (for a display)
