Snippets from an article from The News Herald

Previously, the society used money Lake County commissioners allotted from the county's general fund for these special projects. But this year, there's no money. The commissioners gave money to four historical societies in 2009: Madison, Perry, Fairport and the Lake County Historical Society. For 2010, none are budgeted to receive anything.

........
Platko said the Perry Historical Society used the commissioners' money for specific projects, never as an operating budget cornerstone. "We've been able to manage on the money we raise," she said.

Fairport Historical Society President Dan Maxson agreed: "You don't build a budget counting on that money." However, he noted that the money was useful for special projects while restoring the Fairport Harbor lighthouse. "Everything is sweat equity with us. We need a new deck. We need a new door. We take care of it ourselves," Maxson said of the all-volunteer society. "This just makes it that much harder."

Similar to the Lake County Historical Society, the Fairport society will need to slow restoration of the lighthouse if there aren't other ways to increase money. The society tries to promote the lighthouse. The agency invited the Lake Erie Monsters to film player introductions by it, and Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel have filmed episodes there about the legendary ghost cat, Maxson said.

"We're open to anything that brings people to our site," he said.

The historical societies were disappointed, but not angry, about the funding loss. They thanked the commissioners for their past generosity and hoped they are kept in mind should the fiscal situation improve.

No one knows how many humdingers
there are in a lollapalooza."
