St. John said where the lens will end up will depend on several factors, including where the lens was originally. While the Coast Guard often receives requests for lenses from museums, St. John said Humboldt County has an advantage because the lens was originally installed here.

I couldn't connect to that last link, Barry....But per the one before, I would still stand firm on returning the lens to the lighthouse that it came from.....The city has no hold on it in any kind of historical sense. It should be returned to the light.

In this day and age, it's a matter of time and some monster will attempt to destroy it. Coast Guard, take it away and stow it until which time it can be displayed properly. If you have ever seen a First Order Lens up close and personal you will have to agree it must be managed in a controlled environment. I agree put a fake lens in a fake tower.

I had a chance to actually go up into the tower at the fair grounds back before Turkey Day, and that lens needs some TLC in a major way. Give me a bit and I will try to post some of the photos I took of the lens. The poor baby is covered in rust, grease, and spider webs.

If anyone has a chance go up to Crescent City and see a proper First Order at the Del Norte Museum. I personally had an opportunity to spin this beauty with one finger. This is not something you display at a circus. It may be awhile after the Coast Guard takes custody to see this baby in it's full glory somewhere, but in the mean time you can go north or go south to Pt Loma in San Diego and see another on display. As a former Lighthouse Keeper, I've fallen for them. You betcha.

From the 2008 inspection report by professional lampists James Woodward, James Dunlap & Kurt Fosburg: DOC] INSPECTION REPORT, CONDITION ASSESSMENT

Based on the findings of this assessment it is recommended that the present building is not an adequate place for the continued safe display of the lens. The advanced deterioration of much of the lens assembly will require significant restoration work simply in order to preserve it whether it remains in the building or is subsequently removed. As it is presently the lens is in a downward spiral of self destruction that it will not recover from without significant outside intervention.

In response the Ferndale folks went lampist shopping and found a group of claimed to be such who disputed the report from the Woodward group. They stated it was in good condition, as if with segments falling out. In the mean time in the four years since the Woodward inspection the lens continues its "downward spiral of self destruction" not only from lack of attention but also it has suffered from inappropriate and destructive attention. Ferndale continues to demonstrate they are incapable of protecting this lens let alone preserving this lens now or in the future. It therefore is most appropriate to cease all the talk and get that lens out of there.

it's that “little government” hasn't done their job and taken care of the lens in the first place. The attitude that “we were not told to take care of the lens” is idiotic and irresponsible.

This unfortunately is so very typical of "little governments".
