Unusual sunset at South Haven

A forum to post any lighthouse pictures you'd like others to see. Feel free to talk about lighthouse photography. Lighthouse-related photos (such as LSS and lenses) are also welcome.

After I went to St. Joe's a couple weeks ago to shoot a sunset, it really got me revved up to get out and start shooting again after my paternity break. So this past Monday I made the journey up to South Haven in the hopes of seeing some more of nature's light show.

Unfortunately when I arrived the conditions didn't look good for a sunset. As you can start to see here, there was a lot of cloud cover on the horizon.

While I waited for the sunset I thought I could waste some time and get a couple shots of dune fence as a homage to Gary.

And here is where I got pretty depressed, those clouds were thick, no way there would be any kind of show through those....

But since I made the 90 minute trip, I figured I'd at least enjoy the beach and the breeze as the daylight left. But as the sun sunk, I noticed something funny. There was a hole in the clouds and there was some strong red coming out of it.

At the peak of the show, the red light looked (to me) like a jet afterburner shooting out of the clouds, and the intense color outlined some of the clouds in the area.

I even got a touch of reflection on the water...

A lesson I've learned over and over is here repeated... Even if it looks like a sunset is going to fizzle, just stay put and see what happens. You might get something to make the trip worth while.

And those of you familliar with South Haven, notice the new light tower on the north pier. This is the first time I've seen it, it must have been installed this spring.

Mike,

Excellent job on these! Each one seemed to be better than the previous one as I scrolled, but I think all of them are keepers. Especially the last one!

Thanks for sharing them with us!

The photo that I like the best is the one right after the fence one. The gold hues in the sky and the gold reflection on the water. The ones with the red coming out of the clouds have wow factor to them.

I also like the picture of the fence I am sure why I just really like it.

Very cool! Goes to show that the skies are painted different every night. Love the new channel marker; although it won't get as interesting of ice formations on it in the winter as the old one!
