Last week my friend and I travelled to Norway, where I had to speak on a seminar about preservation and future use of lighthouses. We were able to stay an extra day in the country and to our pleasant surprise the organizers of the seminar arranged accommodation for us in the old Odderøya lighthouse near Kristiansand. A very pittoresque location with a view over the fjord and the new lighthouse, standing just 30ft in front of the old one.

It must have been really cool to stay at the lighthouse, especially since there are two in that location. I think the design on the new one is neat.

Why did they build a new one instead of using the old one?

Here's the new light at night, seen from the balcony of the old light. I took ISO 1600 and hold de camera against the railing of the balcony, to be able to shoot this picture without flash. Fortunately the light is occulting, which makes it easy to make the picture at the moment that the light is on. The window at landside of the light was obscured, so the light was only sent over the fjord. In the right upper edge of the photo you can see the lights of Kristiansand.
