Here's another shot from Saturday afternoon... in this case, a wide angle looking north toward the Verrazano Narrows bridge. Romer Shoal lighthouse is off to the right.

The seagoing dredging ship McFarland in the deep water channel just off the tip of Sandy Hook with the Romer Shoal lighthouse in the background over the foredeck. You can also see the upper part of the Statue of Liberty in the far distance beyond the Verrazano Narrows Bridge ramp.

In addition to cruise liners, there was also some container ship and tanker traffic going past Romer Shoal last Saturday.

I like the picture with the McFarland. It looks like they are shipping the lighthouse.

You're right, would have been a heck of a bow light!

Here's another shot of one of the cruise liners coming out of NYC last Saturday, in this case, the Norwegian Spirit. Romer Shoal lighthouse is in the foreground just off her starboard bow. Back in the distance you can see the top of the Statue of Liberty.

For the boat nerds in the crowd, there are a couple more shots of a couple of ships coming :!:

This first shot is the Hapag-Lloyd lines Stuttgart Express headed north into New York harbor passing in front of the Fort Wadsworth lighthouse.

You can actually read the name on her stern from the 35 Mbyte TIFF file after conversion from the Nikon RAW file.

It's been a while since I've had the time to post photos, but I now have a couple that fit nicely into this thread.

Last week my lovely wife and I took our first vacation since the boys were born, which was a much needed respite. Anyway, we stayed with our friends the Feltners on Drummond Island, which is just off the extreme eastern tip of the UP of Michigan. One night we sat out on the deck watching the sun set over Lake Huron and the DeTour Reef Light. Of course, this being one of the busiest intersections in the great lakes, there were ships passing.. So, I got shots of two of them passing by the DRL under a fiery setting sun. Nice...

Image

This was the first ship that passed, there was enough light that I could get it at low ISO with little motion blur.

Image

This one, however, was tougher. Once I remembered to crank up the ISO she was almost on top of the lighthouse. So not my ideal shot, but I like it anyway.

Nice shots, Mike, and congratulations on the escape from the tugs for a few days! As much as we love 'em it's still nice to get a break from 'em for a bit now and again... Any of them painting the floor with yellow mustard again lately?
