Seems like it's about time to bring this thread up again... I got a couple of shots of Great Lakers this week sliding by lighthouses. This first one is the self-unloader Maumee with the Old Fairport, Ohio lighthouse in the background.

I'm not sure, but this may have been the Maumee coming back into port at Ashtabula, Ohio last week. It isn't all that far up the coast from Fairport Harbor to Ashtabula. I spotted this vessel while she was still just peeking over the horizon. You can't see most of the hull when this was shot and there were considerable heat shimmers disturbing the air between me and where she was out on Lake Erie. This was shot with a 900 mm focal length.

Thinking about it, this is probably a sight familiar to Boats with vessel partially over the horizon...

I think it is, Hersh, but she was way too far out for me to read the name on her bow. I tried :!:

Looking at the forward self-unloading apparatus, the shape of the stack, the configuration of the antennae, even the two-tone Lower Lakes Towing paint scheme... Plus that fact that she was seen in the area, I'm secure in that.

From the mirage discussion on the Toronto thread, it's interesting to note here how distorted the self-unloading boom is on the Maumee on this shot. I've got another half a dozen over her as she came over the horizon. I'll downsize one or two of them and will get them posted for comparison.
