Montauk Point / Fire Island

A forum to post any lighthouse pictures you'd like others to see. Feel free to talk about lighthouse photography. Lighthouse-related photos (such as LSS and lenses) are also welcome.

Just spent two plus days on Eastern Long Island with friends ...

For sure, if I was there, despite all preceding weather reports, the "chance of a shower"
for Monday turned into an all day wind and rain fest ... Tuesday, on the other hand, was
gorgeous ...

Here are the first two shots ... hopefully more to follow during game six tonight

Barry,
Great photos of both Lights, I personally love the whole area of Montauk, NY. Without a doubt my alltime favorite lighthouse. Doesn't look like there were many fisherman out on the rocks that day. Thanks for sharing, would love to see more. RED

Thanks Red ...

Only I could go the approximate 200 miles out to the Point and find out the
grounds were closed on weekdays starting that very day :? This being my
third trip out there in all my born days, did some exploring and found the
path down to the beach "close" to the light and Camp Hero Park, which
skirted the cliffs just a tad west of the light ... also played on the rocks
on the north side as well ...

Here are a few more of Montauk and the surroundings ...

Those are some gorgeous shots, Barry. You know I love that shot of the lantern through the grasses. Were you lying on the ground? Only a true photographer lies on the November ground to get that perfect shot. 8)

The cliff shots (both with and without Montauk) are dramatic. Thanks for posting these. :)

Hi Sue ... Our MIA Shirin use to refer to that as a "cheeks of my butt" shot ...

While I would like to say yes, and while I have given many a clean pair a jeans
for the cause, in this case it wasnt necessary ... The lighthouse raises to a point.
Circling below the light, protecting from erosion, are many, many boulders ... they
were created, at one point, with a flat two boulder width as a walking path circling
the light ... above that path and below the light are the grasses and the reeds.
All I needed to do was NOT step backwards off those rocks as I shot upward

(Sue ... this was taken Monday, in the rain and the gray. Not the
best picture but it illustrates what I was trying to say ... this is the "other" side of
the light, the north side. If you follow those rocks around you can see a fence out
there. Just before that fence, looking back up toward the light, the reeds are between
the camera and the tower. If you were to walk just a little further past that, you would
literally be on the "point" of Montauk Point. You could go no further on Long Island on
(realtively) dry land)

Barry,
Love the second batch of shots, I too found the tunnel in the brush that led to the beach below the lighthouse, The morning my wife and I went on the beach there must have been 100 surf fishermen lined up and down the rocky beach. While we were there schools of Bluefish and Striped Bass were running, I've never seen so many fish caught at one time. My wife got a picture of five fisherman each with a fish on their lines.. It is an amazing place! RED
