Several days ago an article was posted on the LH.net home page describing fund raising for the Nahant Life-Saving Station project. For those who are interested in lifesaving stations I am posting this information.

The Nahant Life-Saving Station is located in the Town of Nahant at the northern side of Boston Harbor. The Nahant station structure is a one-of-a-kind design and was constructed in 1899. The station begam operation in 1900 and was the third lifesaving station for Boston. The first station was Point Allerton at Hull (1890) on the south side of the outer harbor and the second was the City Point floating station (1895) to serve the inner harbor.

The Nahant station remained active into the Coast Guard years and was the Nahant Lifeboat Station until it was deactiviated in 1966. The building was then used as a family recreation facility by the CG until 1997. Two years later the Town of Nahant acquired ownership and the Nahant Life-Saving Station Committee was formed.

Resulting from the work done by the Nahant Life-Saving Station Committee, funds have be acquired from grants and from contributions that are being used to restore preserve and restore the station. A grass roots community campaign has currently raised over $150,000. The website below provides more information about present and future plans for this lifesaving station.

This is a good example of what a small group of dedicated and focused people can accomplish is a short period of time.
