Republicans Paint Stimulus as a 'Failure'
WASHINGTON -- Hoping to cast a shadow on Vice President Joe Biden's announcement of funding for law enforcement, Republicans on Tuesday highlighted the "failure" of the $787 billion stimulus package in Delaware and the region ... The release also targets plans to spend $400,000 on a permanent berth for the historic Lightship Overfalls in Lewes as "stimulus money wasted in the First State." ... The Overfalls berth project and a $7.4 million stimulus grant for boardwalk revival in Rehoboth Beach were highlighted last month in a report on "100 examples of questionable stimulus projects" by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla ...
Delaware Department of Transportation spokesman Darrel Cole said the projects are easy to defend.
The Overfalls berth was one of few projects that qualified as a "shovel-ready" transportation enhancement, and it received more positive responses from the public than any other project, he said..."It's not only is going to create hundreds of jobs, but it's going to invest in the economic infrastructure, which is in this case is tourism," he said.
