I just recently purchased this book. For the time it went to press, and for the majority of the content I am enjoying it thus far.

However, it briefly stated on pg. 49:

"....even more important, the weather and sea conditions a ship encountered transiting between the cold waters and the warm Gulf Stream could cause danger."

Could someone explain this to me further? Thanks.

Beth

When the warm currents of the Gulf Stream meet the cold waters of the Labrador current, it causes very unpredictable weather, and therefore danger to ships.

This happens north of Hatteras before the currents move NE into the Atlantic.

Beth, did you see this article about the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum? It also mentions the Gulf Stream and Labrador currents.

And here's another newspaper article about the Monitor that also talks about this intersection of currents in the Hatteras area...
