A native voice from the only state that has a dead animal on a license plate.
He's young. Maybe he'll grow up someday and find a good woman "from away"...a "flatlander" who understands the value of history and that lighthouses aren't put there just to lure in tourists.

Thanks for the article, Barry. I wish these youngsters success. Maybe, they'll even find the time to visit the coast someday.

The first plan was to have a live animal on the Maine plates but they couldn't decide which animal. The moose was a bit too big so that was eliminated from consideration. They considered skunks, racoons, rabbits, etc., but each of these presented unique problems. Finally they settled on birds ---gull, crow, owl and smaller birds --- but by then both the ASPCA and the "bird outfits" were complaining so loudly it was decided to go to a dead animal. But then many Maine plates already had dead animals or parts thereof --- road kill --- and sometimes two-legged road kill -- tourists and the like.

All this could have been avoided and can in the future if they had made license plates with a space where people could put on a sticker of their choice --a bird, lighthouse, outhouse, moose, skunk and so on or even individual or family photos or perhaps their favorite politican--Nancy Pelosi, Barnie Frank or whoever. Then if people changed their minds later, which they no doubt would, all they need to do is change stickers. And think of the really great business opportunity to stimulate the economy --- producing and selling license plate stickers. And for individuals there would be the opportunity to make a few bucks renting this space on their license plate to some business for advertising.
