Maybe he hit his head on the cranse iron when he was tightening the outboard end of the bobstays. He could not reach the inboard end where they attach to the cutwater.

All you ferry boat riders stand fast here. Every go to a marble contest, them boys ant talking about bowling. When at sea on a ship, you better know the the terms of what your using. So now, let me through another term at ya. Where on a ship is the floor, now there ant but one floor on a ship so you better get right. And it ant the deck. Dig them seaman books out and dig. "Land loving pond sailor". And know I did'nt take a nip or hit my Bos'n head. Bad enough I let my coffee go cold iron. And by the way, do ya know what cold iron is. Stand fast and learn a bit from me and ya get your Z-Card. Ya do know what a Z-Card is I hope. Sound GQ, can't find me mug."Boats"

A deck which doesn't extend the whole length of the ship. Like the poop deck on and old Spanish galleon.

How about the bottom of a vessel and/or the deck built over it that comprised of floor timbers and covered by foot-wailing. This is snipe country where it is more peaceful and quiet with cold iron and and a place where BM's hardly venture.

Boats---What is the cranse iron?
