Francois Soleil Sr. isn't exactly a household name in lighthouse circles but his contribution to lighthouse technology is immeasurable. Do you know what his accomplishment was?

Francois Soleil Sr. was the first to build the lenses for Fresnel. His son Francois Jr. took over the work, and continued working in Paris, until he went to St. Petersburg Russia, where he continued to build lenses.

Very good, Judy! I thought he was a member of the famed Cirque Du Soleil?

When I saw Soleil I thought of Soleil Moon Frye from Punky Brewster and Sabrina the Teen Witch. Man, I watch way too much TV!

Another person who is not well known is Leonor Fresnel, Augustin's brother and associate in lens development.

Brent.

You are right there is very little to be found about Leonor Fresnel. I would be interested in learning more. What little I know is he was Augustin's younger brother, he worked with lens and lamps with his brother and a French navy ship was named for him.

In my most recent search on the internet on this subject I found a rather comprenensive document about light towers, lamps, lenses, fog signals, etc. It is tough to read with 19 pages of small font and no paragraph breaks but it is loaded with information.

You're right Dave...a lot of information but you'd go blind in the process! :)
I was thinking about printing it off, then enlarge it....but they don't allow you to do that either.

Thanks,
Brent

I'm going out on a limb on this.....
I remember reading several years ago (but not sure where) about a guy named Henri LaCrouix (spelling ?), who actually designed and configured the beehive as well as designing all of the patterns for the various size prisms, brass channels, top and bottom "O" rings, et al, which became the standard in Fresnel lens production for many years.
I only mention this because his contribution was so great, but yet, his name is virtually never mentioned in any texts)
