Great Lakes lantern identifcation contest - Prize offered

Trivia! Trivia! Trivia! All lighthouse and life saving station trivia, as well as any contests or contest links!

Postby Terry_Pepper » Tue Mar 29, 2005 11:01 am

While reviewing lanterns designs on lakes Superior, Huron and Michigan while creating a database of lantern information late last night, I thought it might be fun to put together a lantern identification puzzle for my fellow Great Lakes lighthouse junkies.

If you would like to give it a go, here are the rules:

Do not post your answers in the forum, but send me a private message listing of which lighthouse you believe each of the 49 lanterns shown below belong. Please include the accompanying number for each, as in the following fictitious example:

1 - Lonesome Point
2 – Rocky Bay
3 – Whisky Shoal

I will then post the name of the first person to send me a correct listing here in this topic.

To “spice the pot” I will send the winning entry a CD with 10 digitized Great Lakes Light Lists from 1845 through 1977, all in PDF format.

Note that if you send an incorrect response, I will not send you the correct list, in order to prevent anyone from passing the answers to someone else. I will only tell you how many you have incorrectly identified.

Give it a go!

After almost 24 hours, I have received two entries.

The first received mis-identified two of the lanterns.
The second received mis-identified three.

I will keep the contest open through Sunday April 3, and will post the correct result at that time, or after the first correct entry is received.

Congratulations to Hersh for sending the winning entry, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is a certified Great Lakes Lighthouse Junkie!

I will wait until Sunday April 3 to post the listing of all 49 lighthouses in case anyone else would like to give it a try for bragging rights.

Mike, I will burn your CD this weekend and get it in the mail to you on Monday if you would send your mailing address to my regular home email address.

Again - congratulations.

I guess I have too much free time on my hands....

There were some really tough ones in there, as well as a couple I should have known right off the bat but spaced on.

All in all a great contest Terry, thanks for the mental workout.

Anyone else still playing??

Escanaba crib was really tough, and Grand Traverse, which I should have gotten on first glance, was too. The one I finally got right to win was Seul Choix. I had initially labeled it as New Presque Isle and then forgotten about it. Only when I was really examining them did I notice that the brickwork behind the corbels white while Presque is solid green.

All in all, this caused me to pull out a good deal of my remaining hair.

Also, Seul Choix Pointe has a cylindrical ventilator atop the lantern roof, similar to those normally found on oil storage buoldings only larger.

Presque Isle and Wind Point, which were also identifed as image 28 by a couple of folks, all are all equipped with standard cylindrical vent balls.

Call me anal - call me a nerd - I accept all such comments with pride - LOL!
