This news came to us from the Park Service last week as a team of OBLHS members worked in Manteo labeling and packing the 1854 Henry Lepaute 1st Order Fresnel Lens from the 1803 Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.

The Coast Guard has signed the paperwork transferring ownership of the 1st Order Fesnel Lens that sits inside the lantern room to the National Park Service which also now owns the tower and the grounds and surrounding buildings.

A transfer ceremony & celebration will take place sometime in April and the public is invited. Date will be announced as soon as we hear, but we've asked that it be worked around our OBLHS Spring Retreat when the society members will be down in Southport, so that we can attend this event!

Completion of restoration of both the tower and the lens is slated for 2007. Large funds are still needed, although much is already in place.

OBLHS will partner with the Park for the maintenance of the lens. We are hoping that our US reps will push restoration forward so both the tower and the lens can be restored at the same time.

Last summer, major damage occurred during the hurricane season, and major pieces of the ironwork that holds the lantern room fell to the ground, resulting in a larger area of the grounds being roped off for safety purposes.

It's nice to have some GOOD news come out of the tarheel state for a while. If Virginia would annex Currituck County, it'd be all good !!!!

It's wonderful to hear some GREAT lighthouse news for a change instead of yet another tale of the infuriatingly stupidand short-sighted behavior of the Currituck County commissioners :!:

The beautiful 1st order Fresnel lens as it sits in the lantern room...

...the lens lighted in the evening...

...and finally the lens lit by the light of dawn...

Since there are a lot of new people on LH.net, there's also a gallery on my website of images shot when I was fortunate enough to get permission to climb Bodie Island last spring to photograph the lens...

Virginia doesn't want Currituck County! Maybe we should send CC up north!

Judy, exactly how much funds is needed for complete restoration???? I am excited very much as well to hear good news coming from our coastline, instead of, ya know.....

How much is needed? Does Jones also have a say in voting for Bodie to receive funds as well?

Beth,

I haven't heard an exact figure yet, but hope to get one.

As for Jones...YES!

The money requested by the NPS has been denied before thanks to the infamous politician. It seems he doesn't like lighthouses.

A quote from the newly printed edition of the OBLHS newsletter...
OBLHS continues to make known to our statewide and national representatives the critical and immediate need for restoration of the Bodie Island Lighthouse and its 1st Order lens. Restoration funds need to be expedited before planned 2007 legislation.

Not the Virginia I was born and raised and schooled in!

The only connection to Currituck County that would be favorable is the long awaited, much talked about, connector bridge.

And as for the politicians, they wouldn't even be allowed across the VA border without first paying a HUGE fine!
