I'm a new junior volunteer at the St. Augustine light in Florida. I had my first day last sunday and I loved it. I helped with monitoring the visitors at the tower. Next time I'll be doing more things. :D

it's great that you are volunteering! It will be people such as you who continue to interest the general public in what lighthouses are all about and to help preserve them for future generations.

I was a volunteer at Cape Hatteras back in the early 90's and it is
one of those great experiences that you'll never forget!

Looking forward to hearing more about your volunteer experiences.

Some things it might be helpful to know.

1. Where is the closest bathroom? I'd have to say that while volunteering at Sandy Hook that has to be the number one question I get.

2. How many steps are there to the top? This question is very close behind #1. No matter how many times the number can be posted around the site, they'll still ask.

3. Are there other lighthouses in the area I can visit? I'm sure you'll run across many people wanting to know this one.

I'm sure as the day goes on I'll have other idea for ya. Most importantly, be prepared to talk and smile all day as you interact with guests to the lighthouse. A sore throat and/or jaw is a good sign you've had a very good lighthousing day! Have plenty of water on hand and have fun!

Absolutely great that you are volunteering. Your lighthouse has a great crew, and Kathy Fleming's a real can-do person.

What Shirin said, plus just keep a very sharp eye out for safety issues, especially on the stairs. Visitors can get pretty giddy about the experience, and you're their common-sense backup.

And smile a lot. You should enjoy yourself enough so that comes easily!

We were at St. Augustine last weekend on Friday (22nd) night and Saturday (23rd). I hate that we missed a chance to meet up with you.

St. Augustine is a wonderfully restored light. This was our second visit, but our first when we really knew what we were doing. I will post some photos when I get them ready if you are intersted in seeing them.

I would love to see the photos! I've only been once and loved it. I had hoped to go back this summer but doesn't look like it's happening in the near future.
