Mike and I are heading out on Friday to the OuterBanks \:D/ . We have not yet been to Cape Lookout, and was wondering if anyone has any information or best way to get from Buxton to the Cape. Right now, it looks like the ferry over to Cedar Island Ferry, to Rt. 70 to I guess, Harkers Island. From there I'm lost. Any kind of information will be greatly appreciated!

Well Roseanne,

Leah would suggest this way ...

Believe those who search for the truth ...
Doubt those who find it ...

Roseann,

Once you get to Harker's Island, follow Harkers Island Road all the way to the end.
The NPS has their building at the end of the road and that's also where the Harker's Island Visitor's Center is located-and from there you can also see Cape Lookout across the water. If the weather is bad, you will not be able to cross.

Call this # 252-728-2250 or stop by (H I Visitor's Center- open 9-5) and they can give you info on the individual ferry companies, which are all located on that end of the road. You'll see these as you are nearing the Park Service Building. Most look like they are operated from private homes.

Also, next door to the Park Service is the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum, a lovely place to visit if you have time. If you need to spend the night, you will need to go into Beaufort or Morehead City.

Hope this helps some.
Happy adventure!

Roseann, Barry is absolutely right!!! The ONLY way to go is via Shark Boat ooh-ha-ha out of Beaufort!!

I have taken the smaller boat out of Harkers Island as well, and it is fun, but nothing compared to the Shark Boat!!!!

Have a blast. :D

Roseann,

I hope you and Mike have a wonderful time on your trip. I am sure you let us know all about it when you get back. How long will your vacation be? What else are you planning on seeing?
