... and a little more information ... from the Post and Courier of Charleston ...

Project agreement has Morris Island Lighthouse fans beaming

BY KRISTEN HANKLA
The Post and Courier

With two signatures, a dream has come true.

The Morris Island Project Cooperative Agreement was signed Friday by Frank Fusco, executive director of the S.C. State Budget and Control Board, and Lt. Col. Edward Fleming, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Charleston District.

The agreement allows the corps to seek bids for foundation work aimed at stabilizing the lighthouse, which involves sinking a steel cofferdam around the base and pouring concrete inside that. Large stones will be placed on the seabed surrounding the cofferdam to minimize erosion. Fleming said the corps hopes to award a contract just after the first of the year and complete the construction before hurricane season hits.

"It's such a happy day," said Joyce Wichmann of Save the Light, the group of local residents who have worked nearly eight years to preserve the lighthouse. "We're finally gonna save the ol' girl."

Sen. Lindsey Graham and Rep. Henry Brown, who together secured about $3 million in federal funds for the project, addressed the approximately 30 people gathered at Folly Beach City Hall.

"The state has a bright future," Graham said. "One of the reasons we have a bright future is we treasure our past."

Graham said the lighthouse represents a rich maritime history, and preserving it is a good expenditure of taxpayers' dollars.

"To let this lighthouse be swept away would have been a historic crime," he said.

Brown praised the efforts of Save the Light. "It just proves that if enough people are interested in making something happen, they can make it happen," he said.

Before signing the agreement, Fusco told the group, "Your perseverance has made this day possible."

Graham, Brown, Folly Beach Mayor Carl Beckmann and Save the Light Chairman Richard Beck stood under a painting of the lighthouse by local artist Jim Booth as the agreement was signed. State Sen. Glenn McConnell, state Rep. Wallace Scarborough and state Sen. Chip Campsen also attended.

Betty O'Brien, who drove from Greer to attend the signing ceremony, was all smiles afterward. O'Brien is on the Save the Light advisory board and is founder and president of a chapter of Harbour Lights Lighthouse Club that meets in Greenville. She said the chapter adopted the Morris Island lighthouse four years ago "because it was in dire need," and has been raising money since. O'Brien said she felt humbled to be a part of preserving the historical monument, which will now be here for generations to come.

"It's a dream come true for a lighthouse lover," she said.

I was wondering if an agreement would be signed and
agreed to before MI toppled over.
It's about time!

'Kudo's' to Mr. Morrison for having the insight...and to Mr. Baldwin for sharing an interesting story with the press!
Another example as to how well most lighthouses were built! :D

Thanks for posting the article, Barry!

Once the coffer dam is completed, everyone will 'breath' a little
easier! :)
Thanks for the update, Barry!

The cofferdam around the lighthouse has allowed the removal of crumbling
concrete slabs, exposing what's left of the original foundation work.
