If you're traveling to the southern part of the outer banks of North Carolina, you can now tour the Oak Island Lighthouse. The lower level will be open for regular tours and you can climb by appointment.

Call 910-278-1328 for appointments.

Wish I could get down there for a tour. I'd love to go back to that area!

Thanks, Judy. We'll be down in that neck of the woods the first week of July. I may need to do this!

Larry, go climb for me too. I've been inside the lighthouse and took some photos looking up, but they weren't allowing climbing then.

Judy, do you have any pictures from the inside for us to see?
The picture from Wilmington Star really shows an interesting staircase!

This was taken standing inside the lh looking straight up. It shows the intricate ladder climbing system. Only interior shot I could find. Gee...guess I need to go back.

Thanks for posting, very interesting lighthouse. This lighthouse was built in the mid 50's right? Quite large light for being built that late.
Seems to be quite steep stairs in this one.

Does any body have any pictures of the outside of this lighthouse. The stairs look like ships stairs or ladders to me.

Thank you,

Here you go, Carole,

When pulling this site up for Carole, I also realized there are numerous interior shots contained in it's gallery.

Moosup, the lighthouse was built in 1958 and the color was added to the concret, so the lighthouse never has to be painted!
