The Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Coast Guard had a disagreement....The Coast Guard won and closed the lighthouse!

I climbed the tower just a couple years ago, it is as safe as Ponce Inlet or St. Augustine. Both have a lot more people climb and Ponce is taller.

I hope someone takes the 'lead' on this and starts charging fees so they can purchase some liability insurance and create a 'reserve' for future maintenance. :(

There is a new Pensacola Lighthouse Association (less than a year old) and they will be getting help from the Florida Lighthouse Assocation. Also they will be able to at least give tours of the downstairs of the keepers house in the meanwhile and of course the grounds are still open for pictures of the outside of the town.

I can't imagine any major problems developing between the NPS and the Navy base, IMHO. This type of an agreement is not that unusual.

Just another note. The Keepers house has the Army upstairs, so there is another party (I believe the building is their's).
