Sad news indeed. I climbed Hatteras the very day before it closed to public climbing in June 2002 for a piece of the stair structure falling. If I recall correctly it wasn't until late 2003 that it re-opened to the public. I certainly hope the issue is lesser, and the resolution quicker, at Cape Lookout. Given recent events where our government closes things for our own good in fear we may do something stupid like licking a lighthouse and ingesting lead it just makes me wonder.

It won't be long before none of us can get within a mile of anything for fear we may hurt our poor little selves.

EDIT: In looking at this thread again today I realized I was in error months ago when posting this. The closure was June of 2001, not 2002. It was reopened late in the following year so that should have been 2002, not 2003.

If you're going to be in the area, go visit anyway, even you can't climb Cape Lookout this summer. It will be an experience well worth taking. Plan enough time to explore.
