Well I made it to my first lighthouse challenge, man it felt great!! I got to Twin Lights, Sandy Hook and Sea Girt. My favorite light is a toss up between Twin Lights and Sea Girt. My folks also enjoyed driving around the Jersey Coast looking around at houses they can't afford. I'm sorry I didn't get to actually meet anyone from on this board!! Maybe next year!!

I'm a few months late (I just have really been too busy to post), but we visited all 11 lighthouses here in the Garden State, once again. 2003 was more rushed, because of my fiance's hours, so we could only visit 3 on Saturday and the rest on Sunday. However, this past October, he had both days off, and we took our time and did the southern route Saturday, ending with Hereford Inlet (we lingered oceanfront there and Absecon was closed by the time we were going to go), so we started at Sandy Hook the next morning and ended up at Absecon.

In 2003, I took a picture of each lighthouse and any written info about it (signs) (I'm in the midst of trying to get all these pictures uploaded on this webpage you guys can get to if you want), but it's slow goin', I have to sort them out from both years and separate NJ from other states. In 2004, our goal was to have our picture taken in front of each lighthouse. We did good, 9 out of 11 lighthouses that we had obliging strangers snap us in front of.

It was more amazing than ever this year, as we did a combination Lighthouse Challenge and mini-roadfood tour (hotdogs in Long Branch, the best). It was just amazing and I'm itching to get out and go!

AL,

Saw the hot dog post from here at work and just felt compelled to respond ...

Always a shame when shrines are not open to the feeding public.

Actually, we went to both. Only thing I ate all day. It was about 11 when we got to the Windmill first. I had never had such a hotdog before. Oh, lord, this is so off-topic, I'm sorry, but I can't stop from telling this story. My fiance went across the street to the 7-11 to use the ATM. While he was there, there was a minor fender-bender. It turns out that Mrs. Max hit somebody with her Caddy in the parking lot. Bill didn't know at the time that it was her. We ate & then went back up the street to Max's (this is what you do on a roadfood-type deal). It was the last day of the season (October 17) and there was a sign on the door saying that it was take-out only for that last day. We stood in the parking lot and ate those luscious Shickhaus hotdogs. Mrs. Max pulls up in the minorly damaged Caddy and Bill runs over, "Are you alright?" She tells us the story and how she didn't want it on her insurance (I can imagine), etc. She also didn't want any of her employees to see it and ask questions!! We were the only ones in the parking lot. She's so down to earth, so gruff, I just loved her right away.

Too funny! I would LOVE to be able to do the NJ Challenge this year, and if it's at all feasible I want to be able to add my 2 cents worth to this hot dog survey!!!!

I hope to do the challenge this year as well. I am intrigued by these famous hot dogs, though. Not sure what they are, but must be worth trying for myself when I'm there. Looking forward to it! Leah, I can add my 2 cents worth right along with ya!

Beth ... Leah

While your "two cents" would go a long way in the gastronomic debate, I am afraid it wont get you much food ... especially here ...

Maybe this will help ...

Leah: You can probably get an online coupon anytime http://www.windmillfastfoods.com/ (although this is not really fast food in the Wendy's/McD sense, that's what the site name is. It's more like small town fast food before they had McD, pretty much). It's so wonderful to combine a lighthouse trip with a roadfood trip. For me that's pretty much the ultimate!
