From The News-Journal ... now at $110,000

http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs ... /-1/NEWS01

But how irritating is a quote like his ...

The auction was supposed to end at 2 p.m. Friday, but a flurry of bids through the morning and early afternoon resulted in the auction being extended for one business day.

Lets see has not this type of extension on taking bids occurred with lighthouses before. New owner of this lighthouse should have a good lawyer, a health bank account and friends/family that are willing to give you support when you need it.

Barry, please keep us updated on what happens with this lighthouse.

The Sandy Point, Baltimore, Smith Point, Thimble Shoal, and Wolf Trap lights in Chesapeake Bay have been sold via auction under the GSA. Others that have been auctioned include Goose Rocks in Maine and Hog Island Shoal in Rhode Island. Lubec Channel Light in Maine is currently being auctioned, but the auction page doesn't seem to be working at this moment:

http://www.auctionrp.com/auctions2/default.cfm?action=itemInfo&id=767

Last time I looked, the high bid was only $10,000.

Another lighthouse that will soon be auctioned is Borden Flats in Fall River, Mass.

Not all of the GSA auctions have been online with the winner being the high bidder. Goose Rocks Light was sold via sealed bid, not necessarily to the high bidder. In that case, the ability of the bidder to care for the lighthouse was taken into account. If they're going to auction offshore lighthouses, I think they should all be done that way.

Jeremy ...

It was my thought Carole was referring to apparent unfairness of extending the deadline for the bidding ...

My poor excuse for a memory says the others were not affected that way ... There was a thread to this effect posted here on 11/30 although the articles are no longer current ... LH Digest I believe also took note of this seemingly contradictory practice

Yes, my post may have been slightly beside the point, sorry. The GSA seems to have much latitude in the way these auctions are conducted, including extensions when they see fit.

I forget where I've seen that type of auction before, but I know I've seen it somewhere. Basically, the rule is, bidding ends at a certain time or sometime after that if a bid hasn't been placed for x amount of time. It seemed odd the first time I saw it, but if you think about it, it makes sense for the seller.

Another day another 5,000 dollars. When you take in to consideration how much it is going cost to get this lighthouse in any type reasonable condition. What is another 10 to 15,000 dollars to buy it.

So, what will the final dollar amount be for this lighthouse?

Let see if the bidding continues. 150,000 plus would be a good guess of where this is going to end up.
