From The Block Island Times

North Light as Private Nav. Aid

North Light Commission Chairman Rob Gilpin came to the council requesting reaffirmation of an April 2006 decision by an earlier Town Council to make the North Light a private aid to navigation.

The only way the Coast Guard will allow the town to replace the fresnel lens in the lamp there, Gilpin explained, is if the town assumes responsibility for the operation of the lighthouse.

Gilpin said the Coast Guard recently refused to allow the town to put the lens in the lamp, saying it would not be in the best interest of the Coast Guard or the public to expose it to the elements. However, the town owns the lamp, not the Coast Guard, Gilpin said, and he has apprised them of this fact.

The North Light Commission voted to return the lens to the lamp because it will be more accessible to the public there, it will be safer because it is higher above the sea than the museum area, and much money has been spent on the restoration.

Gaffett made the motion to reaffirm the intent for the North Light to be a private aid to navigation, and the motion passed, 3-0. She will contact the town’s federal legislators also.

I guess there are always surprises in restoration. Looks like they have this one solved.

I wonder who wrote that piece Barry posted at the start of this thread.

"--replace the fresnel lens in the lamp." :?
"--put the lens in the lamp." :?
