ATHENS — Members of the Athens Community Foundation Advisory Board and Trustees and representatives of several community groups gathered Monday evening for the Foundation’s annual grant reception at the Athens Firehouse. Foundation Trustee Gene Hatton announced that the Foundation had awarded 28 grants of more than $150,000 to 22 civic, athletic, cultural, fraternal, educational and government groups this year.

This year’s award represented the third-largest amount given since the Athens Community Trust Fund was formed in 2001 as part of a Payment in Lieu of Taxes program agreement between Athens Generating and the Greene County Industrial Development Agency. The fund started with $3 million. Since then, the Foundation has disbursed $900,000 in 185 grants over seven grant cycles.

Grant applications this year totaled $319,473, Hatton said.

Robert Ihlenburg, president of the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society, said the money his organization had received will help it pay off loans for work completed on 40 pilings under the iconic lighthouse.

Work was completed last year but more repairs are needed, he said. The award does not cover all the costs of the $383,000 project, he said.

Ihlenburg said the public has become more aware of the lighthouse repairs during the last few years.
"There are two pips in a beaut, four beauts in a lulu,
Eight lulus in a doozy, and sixteen doozies in a humdinger.

No one knows how many humdingers
there are in a lollapalooza."
