Cape Henrys

Just got back from a lighthouse trip? Have you just finished photographing every aspect of one lighthouse? Post the pictures here! Lighthouse-related photos are also welcome.

Barry's pictures reminded me that I had not yet posted my older (although nowhere near vintage) Cape Henry photos. These were from a trip to Virginia Beach when I was in high school, probably about 1986 or so. I don't know what the occasion was, but both towers were open that day.

The base of Old Cape Henry. It would be interesting if someone had a more recent shot to compare erosion and wear and tear.

The standard shot of the old tower.

New Cape Henry taken from the top of the Old tower. I need to find my photos from 2002 to see what building have been added or subtracted.

Looking down the stairwell in New Cape Henry (I figured this was in the new tower because the walls are white.)

Enjoy,

It's not very often you can shoot one lighthouse from atop another, makes for a great perspective. Thanks for sharing these Maria, if you find some more I hope you'll post them for us.

I wish that New Cape Henry was open the day we went to visit. I guess that gives me another reason to go back.

Thanks for sharing the photos!

Here is a nearly identical shot of the New Cape Henry taken from the light room of the Old Cape Henry 3 years ago.

This one shot from ground level always looks funny at first glance

Does Old Cape Henry have a Birdcage Lantern? It looks kind of like the one at Selkirk

Zachary,

It has a similar lantern but I don't think that it is an official "bird cage" style. I have a close up of the lantern room on my site.

Yes, Old Cape Henry is of "birdcage" construction and design.
(A trait of John McComb's early Federal designs)
It doesn't have the extended metal frameing that Selkirk has
but the interior structure of the lantern room is almost identical
in its construction technique.

My bad. I thought that the "birdcage" style refered to the outside extended metal frames only. Just goes to show that you learn something new every day. :D
