A look around inside Price's Creek

Just got back from a lighthouse trip? Have you just finished photographing every aspect of one lighthouse? Post the pictures here! Lighthouse-related photos are also welcome.

Another thing I wanted to share, opening the tower to the public. I think that if the public were allowed regular access to the tower (in the same fashion as most of NC's lighthouses), it would take away the mystery of it. I don't know about you, but, Price's Creek's mystery is what keeps me drawn to it, and it's why it's my favorite NC lighthouse. It'd be great if the tower was restored fully (a new lantern room could be rebuilt etc...), but, regular access would (in my opinion) take away from it. Maybe selected open house dates would be better (like at Portsmouth Harbour).

Zackary, no one is talking about opening up tours to the general public, only the hope that other groups like ours might be allowed access.

A huge amount of red tape had to be waded through, and many discussions took place before OBLHS was granted permission. We initiated the process back last September, and permission was granted about a week before the Spring Retreat was to take place. A private pontoon boat was used to get us over there (three trips over), and the trip was totally weather dependant, keeping us on edge almost to the zero hour.

The general public wants to do the tourist thing at a pristine tower with easy access, and they don't expect to get wet or get their shoes muddied. I don't see the company who owns the land letting this become a tourist haven.

OBLHS owes a tremendous thanks to many officials who went to bat for us.

Judy,

I completely agree! Sincee the planners of this event had to go through so much to get us there, there is very little to no chance of it becoming a tourist place. Knowing that we were part of the first official group to be allowed to visit makes this trip more memorable.

Indeed it does. A most memorable trip to Price's Creek!

Wouldn't it have been neat if we could have all been there at the same time? Well, might not have allowed for many peopleless photos, huh!

Btw...
Someone took a group Lighthousing.net photo Sat. night. Who's camera was that on? And this was my first time to meet Stephen and Christina in person. I was so looking forward to that meeting, and only wished we'd had more time to spend together.

What an absolute treat to see all these beautiful photos of Price's Creek.
John and I were there last November. At the advice of a man who works for ADM, we contacted a local fisherman who took us out in his boat. Price's Creek is a lonely little light and we were glad to get the photos we got. According to (I think his name is Frank SMith), the light is on the regular maintenance watch of their property. I'm wondering if they built the stairs in anticipation of your trip there. And I agree with whoever said that building and maintaining the stairs does have good reasons behind it.
And think...it might be the first first step (no pun intended) of perhaps one day re-activating the light.

I also agree that regular public access would just make it another light to see and add to a list. Making a visit a special occasion, periodic group tours or special permission keeps the mystery intact.

I am SO envious of you guys for going on this spectacular trip. Now, can I pay someone to get pictures burned to cds so I can be there with you for the whole trip...please, please, please!!!!

Yvonne
