After a couple of days in Edinburgh, we rented a car and headed off for some serious lighthousing. I did not accurately judge just how far it was to Aberdeen, as we hit the highway and quickly found out it is 120 miles. The funny thing is that the UK is supposed to be on the metric system, but they still use miles on their highway signs.

Regardless, we had all day and once we got over the bridge, the traffic started clearing up. After finding lunch at a Burger King in downtown Aberdeen, we went looking for Girdle Ness Lighthouse. After a few minutes of "Are you sure we are on the right road?" and "It doesn't look like there is a lighthouse down here." the top of the lighthouse became visible over the hill. Major thanks to Tom Tag for the directions.

This unique tower with the bulging middle was worth the effort.

Although we were kept form getting too close by the walls and signs, we got close enough to see the unique structure. Unfortunately, the weather was overcast, but at least warm.

The light has a distinctive bulge in the middle that was originally a second lantern.

Just down the hill from Girdle Ness were two pier lights:
A fishing boat comes in past the South Breakwater Light.

Just down the harbor is another pier light.

Driving up from the harbor we came upon this structure, which is actually across the road from the water. It has a red and green light at the top so I am not sure if it functional or decorative.

Aberdeen Harbor was a great stop for watching boats, as both fishing and oil are big industries. We found other people out taking pictures of the lights and ships too, so we didn't look so strange. We could have stayed all day, but we had other lights to find.
