Sault Ste Marie oddity

Just got back from a lighthouse trip? Have you just finished photographing every aspect of one lighthouse? Post the pictures here! Lighthouse-related photos are also welcome.

Here's something that I came across on accident tonight that I just had to show you guys. I actually was thinking of you all when I shot it, on the DRLPS St. Mary's River cruise on Father's day this year.

As our boat approached the Soo locks upbound, the captain brought our attention to the Sault Ste. Marie Edison power plant, which is just east of the museum ship Valley Camp. At first glance it looks normal enough...

But as you get closer you can see something different...

Those are lighthouses built right into the wall !!!! The attention to detail is amazing, do you think they'd put this much work into the aesthetics of a power plant today?

Neat Mike! Do you think that's the remains of a lantern room on the roof?

Mike - very interesting, and very cool. Thanks for sharing this tidbit.

The care taken in the design of public buildings in bygone days never ceases to amaze me.

Particularly when one considers the legacy we are leaving for future generations - concrete shoe boxes with a few square windows named after some sycophantic politician! :D

I've seen some of that building from the backside but had no idea
that it contained a lantern on the top. I thought it was the remnants of an old cupola.
Did anyone tell you what kind of lens it used to contain, Mike?
Thanks for those neat shots! Cool!

As far as I know, that was never a lantern, but I could be wrong. I should look into that....
