The Great Lakes are home to a number of Vega VRB-25 rotating lanterns. However, it seems the march of technology is inevitable. While doing my usual overviews of current USCG documents, I noticed in the latest Notice to Mariners a proposal to change several stations with VRB lanterns to LED lanterns. Not surprising, as the LED lanterns offer significant cost savings in both infrastructure and maintenance. So enjoy those rotating beacons while they last.
