I just learned that Harold Lawson - "Dick" to those who knew him, passed on March 21 while wintering in Florida.

The Principal Keeper of the Dunkirk lighthouse for the past 25 years, Dick's fingerprints and personality can be seen all over the magnificent work that has been undertaken at the Dunkirk lighthouse and museum.

As is frequently the case with most lighthouse preservation groups, it takes a strong individual with a unique combination of tenacity, ingenuity and vision of "what can be" to get the ball rolling, and Dick had those traits in spades. We can only hope there is someone in Dunkirk with the passion and drive to fill his shoes is available to keep the ball rolling.

I spent a couple of hours at the lighthouse chewing the fat with Dick last October. Even though it was he was clearly not in the best of health at that time, he was nonetheless quick to walk me around the property showing off some of his prized recent acquisitions and the base of the original tower which had been exposed as a result of the persistent erosion of the bluff in front of the lighthouse.

From one modern day lighthouse keeper to another – fare well Dick, rest assured your brothers will miss you.
