Apparently graffiti has been an ongoing problem at this light. "Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels said the city's practice has to phone the Coast Guard when it became unsightly and ask for a fresh coat of paint." The most obvious graffiti is the "artwork" on the unpainted concrete pier. In 2010, the Coast Guard announced that due to repeated painting of graffiti on the building it might be necessary to close off public access. Concerning a fence on the breakwater to prevent access the breakwater is not part of the lighthouse property but is owned by the U.S. Corps of Engineers. It is possible to block access to the steps leading to the structure on top of the concrete pier but a fence on the breakwater to be effective would have to extend out into the water.

That is an outright shame. Perhaps motion-sensor camaras could be installed to help catch future vandals.

The bright spot seems to be this fellow Carlucci. He seems to be dedicated to bringing back the light's former glory. I've been out to the Manitowac Light a few times, and it is one of the nicer walks in the area.

It's great to hear that someone actually cares about this! :)
