Committee, volunteers work to restore Port Clinton lighthouse

PORT CLINTON -- For years, some visitors to Brands' Marina on Lakeshore Drive came looking not for boats or dockage, but for an old lighthouse.

"There were an amazing number of people that just travel around, looking for any lighthouse there is."

Sounds like something we'd do.

The Brands inherited the peppermill-style lighthouse, which was built in 1896, from the previous owner of the marina. Recently, she and her husband, Darrell, donated the lighthouse so it can be refurbished and displayed on city property, in hopes of bringing more visitors to the downtown area. Earlier this month, Port Clinton City Council voted to accept the gift of the lighthouse, and members of the Port Clinton Lighthouse Conservancy Group are working to repair it.

This is so great that the city is willing to take it, and Volunteers are wiling to do the restoration ! :D

The lighthouse was built on the west pier to the Portage River, near where the Port Clinton Yacht Club is today. It was the second of the city's lighthouses. The first was a stone structure built on Perry Street at the former mouth of the river. The lighthouse is believed to have operated until 1927. In the late 1940s or early 1950s, local Dave Jeremy was hired to take it away so a more modern lighthouse could be built. Jeremy reportedly saved the building and floated it to his marina, now Brands' Marina.

Nice to read a history of sorts on how the light came to be at the Marina. Kudos to Dave Jeremy for saving it ! As to the "more modern lighthouse", did that ever come about ?

The base of the lighthouse is still at the marina. Focht Construction donated the use of a crane and volunteers transported the cupola to a Catawba Island Township workshop Nov. 7.

I last was at this light about....2008 ? I think. It's looked nice on all my visits, well maintained. Saw the picture and sort of freaked out until I got the this part.

The new home for the lighthouse has not yet been determined, but it will most likely be in the Waterworks Park area.

That's good information to have. Will have to keep an eye out for updates this next year.
Thanks for posting, Clem !!

Now, isn't that something ? 84 years old. We should all be so lucky.

Oh, and thanks for the old pic... That's really something, to see it on it's original 'Legs'.
