I still say it's a ridiculously high fee.

$800 a month to volunteer! That is crazy. I wonder how many volunteers they will get. Do they prorate the price if one only stays a few days?

Suzanne, I think you are bringing up a good point.

I do not have the figures or places so keep this in mind with what I am about to post.

Many of you on this board have gone to various lighthouses and paid to stay for several days. In some cases it is several hundred dollars or more. You the visitor get a chance to stay at a lighthouse and you paying helps with the upkeep of said place.

What I am going to question is how many people are going to want to be round the clock volunteers for a month or more. What would make a person or group want to pay to do this? Does what I am writing make sense to anyone on this board.

If you work for a living, a month is too long. Even with my previous job, having enough leave was only half the equation, your boss had to approve you being gone and most did not want you gone for more than 2 weeks.

It would be ideal for a retired couple or someone who doesn't have to work for a living. Unfortunately, I'll probably never be either of those things!

Nothing like paying for the "privilege" of being a volunteer!! :?

I paid to go out to DeTour for a weekend, and my per day cost was a lot higher than what Mission is charging. But for me it was the rarity of being on an offshore light, just the four of us keepers having full charge of the place and having it all to ourselves except for the scheduled tours.

While Mission is in a wooded lot with the only water view being straight off the front of the building, over the fence that keeps visitors from approaching the house itself. I just don't think Mission has the mystique or atmosphere required for the program the way it's laid out right now.

Mike I agree totally with what you just posted. It is what I was thinking when I first read this posting.

We are always seeking volunteers to stay and work at the Cheboygan River Front Range light. No charge at all!

Terry - If I lived closer I might very well be interested. This was said in earlier postings, a person or persons could think of doing this as part of or all of a vacation. Say for a week or two. Or for several long weekends.

We are very flexible at the Cheboygan River Front Range. You can stay and volunteer at the lighthouse for just about any amount of time, as long as your stay includes at least one weekend.

How much of your stay are you expected to actually be present at the lighthouse?

Mike, you bet me to one of the questions I was going to ask.

Terry, please fill in with the details of what you are looking for and want in your volunteers.

If a couple or whatever combination of two people wanted a month's holiday at a lighthouse $800 per month is pretty cheap. You would not get a unit anywhere here where I live for that amount per week. The lighthouse nearest to me rent out their cottages for $185 per night for example but that's for tourists.

However, all the Oz lights that I have heard of which have volunteer caretakers on a 3 month basis attract no charge at all other that for food and provisions. The Parks people even transport you by chopper if necessary free of charge. I really think it's a bit rough to charge working volunteers any fee at all.
