Charlevoix goes red

A forum to discuss lighthouses in the US Great Lakes Region
(Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and the lake lighthouses of New York & Pennsylvania)

Postby Terry_Pepper » Tue Jul 28, 2009 8:33 pm

Earlier this week, I received a call from the folks with Mihm
Enterprises who informed me that they would begin painting
the Charlevoix South Pierhead lighth red this afternoon. I took
advantage of a rare slow afternoon, stopped by my home,
picked up my wife, and we headed to Charlevoix to check on
the progress. As we arrived in Charlevoix at 3:30 PM, the
lighthouse was still in primer with the exception of the gallery
deck sides and a couple of the window frames.
Image

Making our way through the scaffolding to the outer end of the
pier, we could see that a couple of other spots had been prepped
with red prior to rolling on the main body coat.
Image

Climbing the steep steps, we entered the first deck level where the crew is keeping most of their
supplies.
Image

The view down the ladder from the second deck. I have seen these double-runged ladders on a
number of lighthouses around the Great Lakes, including in the Cheboygan Crib light. They make
for amazingly comfortable footing on ladders.

A shot of the second deck level interior.

Stepping up into the lantern reveals a wonderful view up the channel towards the lift bridge.
Image

Room for painting and scraping on the gallery deck is tight - especially with that Automatic
Signal FA-232 fog signal wedged between the lantern and gallery railing. The gray color
is all primer, all the old white and black paint having been removed.
Image

By 4:15 PM the first coat of red paint was being applied to the South side of the structure.
Image

By the time we were making our way back down the pier,
the red paint had already been applied down one more level
on the scaffolding.
Image

By 5:00 PM, the entire south side of the structure was red for the
first time since it was repainted white in the 1980's.
Image

One last look at the lighthouse as we walked back to the car. We hope to get back to Charlevoix
later this week, when the entire body of the structure should be red and the lantern black.

Terry ... One more time, you are the eyes for those who would have wanted to be there ... thanks very much for the post ... You cited this project here in August of 2007 ... viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6940&p=66798#p66798 ... (the article in the initial post is still active (plus lots of good OMP information))

Within the next five years, Charlevoix’s lighthouse will have a fresh new look

So says the article ... and so this becomes a project accomplshed. How great is that ...

Having seen Charlevoix only in the white, this will take some getting used to, but I like it! Thanks for the report.

I guess I'm just a wet sponge here, but I really liked Charlevoix White......

On the flip side, It IS geting painted, and that's always a good thing, from my veiw....

Terry, thanks for making the trip, and especially for the Interior shots...Places most of us don't get to see....Prehaps you could include those in the next Beacon......and It looked like a fine day up there as well....

The old timber pierhead light was painted red after it was moved from the north pier to the south
pier in 1914. The new steel beacon was also painted red when it was erected to replace the old
structure in 1947. It stayed red until the piers were rebuilt in 1989, when for some reason the
decision was made to paint it white.

So, the structure was red for 75 of the 95 years the beacon has been on the south pier. As such,
I believe it makes historic sense that it be painted red again. The photo postcard below from the
1960's shows the way the light appeared at that time, and the way it will look again after the
current restoration work is complete.

The skeletal iron tower was erected on the north pier in 1913 in conjunction with relocating the old pierhead beacon to the south pier. The skeletal iron tower was replaced by the current pole and day board when the piers were rebuilt in 1989. As such, I would assume the 75 year old structure was cut apart and scrapped.

Here's a photo of the structure taken in 1914

Noah - thanks for the finished photo. Sorry I was out narrating a cruise when you stopped by the GLLKA office - I would enjoyed the opportunity to sit and talk with you.
