The photo is worth a click. It's an older story, but I missed it when it happened in February 2009. Now I read that the officers lost their permissions to sail a boat for 2 years, but had lost their jobs anyway. It looks like alcohol played a big role in this bizarre accident.

The judgment is in Dutch but the statements of the crew are in English. Read it all here: https://zoek.officielebekendmakingen.nl/stcrt-2010-9802.html?zoekcriteria=%3Fzkt%3DUitgebreid&resultIndex=3&sorttype=1&sortorder=4

Wow, Frans, that's quite an account. Seems the Second Mate was supposed to be at watch, but instead down in his bunk, drunk ?

Everybody seems to be pointing the finger at the Second Mate, but also read that others had been drinking on that boat.

Is this a big problem on these ships, even today, over in your part of Europe ?

I presume it has to do with the fact that ship owners look for the cheapest crew instead of for the best. That lighthouse paid the price for globalization.

At least the crew was considerate enough to bring the lighthouse to the port so it could be repaired. :?
